2012 Winter Grading

Once again in 2012 we had full house for our last event of the year. What a great year for our team. It has been amazing so far. Looking back, we had the legend himself Ricardo De La Riva for a visit earlier in May. In August we had the pleasure to welcome Vitor Shaolin for a BJJ/MMA seminar, which has also started our MMA classes.

In competitions our students represented well showing that we are in the right way. White, blue and purple belts doing the homework and the results show our competitive side in all those belts. It makes believe that the future is definitely bright.

Our team is growing in number, but, also in experience. Last Saturday, our grading went to another level. Our first ever (in-house) brown belt! Congrats to Edward Wynn who got awarded his belt after over 3 years as purple belt. As well as Ed, congratulations to the 2012 IMBJJ Academy Blue Belts: Rich Hill, Jurijs Lapainis, Jacek Krawczyk, Mick Griftins, Frazer Cook, Tim Clemens and Joe Pepa.

All those results in 2012 shows that, hard works pays off!

From coach Ivam Maciel and all BJJ Academy crew, have a good Christimas and great 2013!

Osss!

Mission given means mission accomplished!

Saturday was a great day at BJJ Academy, it seemed like we were in Brazil! Outside the sun was shining and inside our Dojo were a great bunch of students learning straight from the source, 3x World Champion Vitor Shaolin. Teaching the best of the gentle art and answering all the student’s questions, Vitor also had the time to share the facts and history of his career back in Japan, USA and Brazil… It was brilliant!

At the end of the seminar our team got together once again and headed to Preto Brazilian Steakhouse, where we finished our day having an authentic Brazilian BBQ. Well done to everyone who made it, this encouragement helps us to keep bringing legends of our sport to train with you and provide you with great experiences. We at BJJ Academy hope everyone enjoyed the seminar and we are looking forward for the next one. Who do you want us to bring next?!

Só o Jiu Jitsu salva!

This is a phase which all BJJ’s practitioners should know. The translation to English would be something like: “Only Jiu Jitsu saves you”. I’m not sure who exactly created this expression, however for the Brazilians (BJJ guys) it became very special, and the symbol for this was Minotauro Nogueira. Big Nog used to get beaten up during all fight and came back at the end with some sick submission to win the fight (Rocky Balboa style), like those of his fights back in Pride against Bob Sapp and maybe the most important at the time: Against Mirko Cro Cop when Mirko was on top of his game knocking people out with some crazy high kicks. Triangles and Arm-bars, it was maybe the most special time for BJJ in MMA beside Royce Gracie’s UFC’s victories.

So, this is the meaning for the “Só o Jiu Jitsu Salva”, check out the video below, it shows our head-coach Ivam Maciel on his second professional MMA fight using pure BJJ to end that fight: Only Jiu Jitsu saves you!

See you on the mats!

Another special guest on the mats was Sensei Roger Payne, who supported once again IMBJJ Team and helped us to make this amazing evening happen. Thanks to all students who made it, your support is much appreciated, it encourage’s our crew to keep bringing seminars and looking forward for more events at your BJJ Academy.
