 WELCOME!

We've made this special page to answer any questions you might have about starting to train in BJJ

What to Wear?

For your first week of training, you don’t need to worry on to buy a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi uniform, we are happy to lend to you (£10 laundry fee) so that you can experience BJJ and be sure it is right for you before you spend money buying your own Gi. After your first week of training we recommend you buy your own Gi. We offer good prices on our in-house store, you can try it and buy straight from us. In some cases you can get it FREE when buying our Starter Pack. For more info, ask a member of our staff.

HYGIENE

Make sure your finger and toe nails are well-groomed. If you have long hair, you’ll want to put it up in a ponytail or bun during class. You should also remove any piercings to prevent injuries.

DON'T BE LATE!

As we have mentioned above, the best thing to do is to show up a at least 15 minutes early to introduce yourself to us and check out the school. You’ll need to sign a waiver and you ready to go. Before class starts, you’ll have a chance to get changed and stretch out on the mats. Be sure to get everything ready before class starts so you don’t have to miss anything.

Your first class

After all that preparation it's time to rock n roll! Most of our classes start with a group warm-up, such as running laps and doing push-ups, followed by solo drills like forward and backward break-falls and shrimping. Those last three moves will probably be new to you. These techniques are important as they are to help you learn how to fall safely and move your hips on the ground. Don't worry, during your first class you will be assisted by an instructor and you will be guided step by step to get it done the right way. Just give your best and HAVE FUN!

Techniques

After warm-ups, you’ll be partnered with someone and go to your own section of the mats to be taught your first lesson. At One Jiu-Jitsu you will practice a beginner curriculum (Drill #1), which includes: Full Guard pass to side control, taking mount from side control and your first submission ever: the Americana shoulder-lock from mount.

Sparring

Most of our classes conclude with live sparring. The Coach will match you up with a sparring partner, and you will practise (roll) for 5-minute rounds. For your first session you will roll lightly, assisted by the Coach and usually with an experienced partner who will let you try the moves you have learnt during the class and help to make any adjustments needed to get it just right. At the start of each round, you’ll begin by facing your partner on your knees. When you’re both ready shake hands and start to roll. Stopping whenever one of you taps and restarting from knees.

After Class

With the class over you might have more questions now you’ve trained for the first time. We usually offer 'Open Mats' sessions after most of our classes. If you want to try techniques again, simply just find a training partner and continue to have fun.

Once that's done, if you enjoyed the class and want to continue training or might have a question have a chat with the Coach and book your next session.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU: Benefits

Great Workout/Get in Shape

After a Jiu Jitsu class, your body and gi (jiu-jitsu uniform) will be soaked in sweat. BJJ is a great workout that incorporates every part of your body. From the warm ups consisting of jogging and calisthenics to the continued movement throughout the classes, you will be expanding and contracting muscles you might not have ever used before. Even for experienced practitioners, this will be a great workout especially if they work with a heavy training partner or drill their techniques at a faster pace. After the warm ups and drilling, the rolling will really elevate the heart rate. You and your training partner will now be providing resistance and will be working to advance position and submit your training partner. Not all rounds of rolling need to be a 100% battle, especially if there is a major gap in skill level or size. Training partners can flow roll or S-train for a great cardio workout that can incorporate the techniques learned during the class. BJJ classes have been reported to burn between 400 to 1,000 calories per session depending on your size and the pace and intensity of the classes.

More Fun Than a Regular Gym

Most of us have been members of a regular gym and we know the routine. There is leg day, chest day, back day, cardio day and it is a very monotonous routine that can get very boring, very quickly. There is also a feeling of individualism and isolation when it comes to going to a regular gym. You might have a workout partner or friend, but in many cases you go in there and workout with the weights, machines and treadmill on your own for an hour or so and go home. There is not the same sense of community and other interaction with others like there is a Jiu Jitsu class. Here at One Jiu Jitsu all you have to do is to open the door! From that moment you will be socialising, getting to know people and hopefully it will become a good part of your day, something to look forward to.

Meet New People
Be part of the team

Let’s be honest, it can be hard to meet new people. It is even harder to meet quality people you would want to interact on with on a daily or weekly basis. Jiu Jitsu classes are a great way to meet new people from every walks of life. It could take time to warm up to teammates and vice versa, but if you give it time, you will make great friends. Part what makes Jiu Jitsu practitioners very friendly is that they work out their stress and are constantly humbled on the mat, which keeps their ego in check. You can't do Jiu-Jitsu by yourself, you can't roll by yourself! We need each-other to practise and to evolve. By having good team mates who care and push you to your limits you will be building strong bounds with the team and with other people. Slowing this will become like a family, where everyone cares about everyone and all get better together.

In life we often get comfortable in our routines of school, work, socializing, family time, and paying bills. There is safety in the comfort of doing what we do and knowing what we know. In many cases we are good at being a good employee, business owner, friend or parent. What happens when you start something new from scratch as an adult where it is almost guaranteed you will struggle for a certain amount of time before you start getting better? While the struggle is painful, the personal growth and pride from overcoming a challenge is very rewarding and can open your eyes to other opportunities in life to help reach your human potential.

Test Your Comfort Zone

The combination of the points above are in some ways parts of a recipe for building your self-confidence. We have been helping many people who have gained the confidence they needed to pursue the life they deserve through Jiu Jitsu. Make the first step today, give us a call 07779 055563, book your 1st session and enjoy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, be part of something awesome!
